What can I do?

No. 21

While some people disappear on their fifth day : most don’t.

And that’s why we keep going.

We’re all pretty much the same ; humans in gray uniforms, bodies completing a chain, pairs of arms working.

In the morning, I’m always looking down on pieces to assemble, moving from left to right with the ticking of the clock.

I’ll never get to see what they’re building at the end of the chain. My group only works with the small things : a motor for an engine, a handle for a door, on rare occasions the doors themselves…

I adjust the metal rings around my head, shortly after, someone says:

“Slow down Waterfall”.

I don’t know who Waterfall is but I’m sure they got the message. That’s what our headpieces are for after all.

We have no excuses to stop. If we need to give instructions to someone on the other side of the room, we open the communication program and type. With our eyes, we shift the focus from one letter to another…S…L…O…

I’m in group F and all of our  head-devices are connected.  If one of us sends something, only those who’s ID start with F will receive it.

It will be read automatically to all of us, and only stop if we decide to press the mute button. The words however will remain on our main screens, until we’re ready to unmute again…

For that reason, one of our silent rules is not to send anything but short instructions.  Anything else would slow us down and hinder our performance.

Virtual drawings, and paintings, writing…All of the other things we do on our device remains private. In any case, these options are only enabled up to a certain work experience. After my tenth period, it became an easy way for me to lose track of time.

But I know that for those who crave adventure, excitement, an adrenaline rush, this will never be enough…
